Rubia tintctorum Seeds

Rubia tinctorum or Madder is a perennial plant belonging to the Rubiacea family. It is cultivated to harvest the plant roots that contains anthroquinones (alizarin and pseudopurpurin), dyeing in various red, pinks and oranges. 

To obtain a good concentration of red dye in the roots, madder plants must to be harvested at least after their third year of growth. 

To break the dormancy of the seeds and facilitate their germination it is advisable to soak them in boiling water for about 12h.

(Put the seeds in a heat resistant container and cover with boiling water about 3/4 of the seeds. That is to say, do not cover the seeds completely with water).
